Meet Your Teacher
John Markham
Certified Teacher of Transcendental Meditation
John Markham is a Certified Teacher of Transcendental Meditation who has been teaching regularly since 1992. A founder member of the Transcendental Meditation community in Lancashire from 1982, he has spent many years helping people from all walks of life develop greater resilience, clarity and wellbeing.
His particular interest is in making high-quality scientific research practical and accessible, translating decades of peer-reviewed evidence into guidance that people can use in everyday life. Through TM in Action, he aims to bridge the gap between research and real-world results.
John is especially committed to helping teams and individuals in business and sport achieve sustainable success while supporting the wellbeing of those working in our hard-pressed public services, including healthcare, education and emergency services. His approach combines authentic teaching, ongoing personal support and a clear commitment to helping people perform at their best without sacrificing their health or quality of life.
Our Approach
Authentic Teaching
Learn the internationally recognised Transcendental Meditation technique exactly as it has been taught by certified teachers for decades. The course follows a proven, structured approach with personal guidance at every stage.
Research Informed
Our approach is supported by decades of peer-reviewed research into stress, health, wellbeing and human performance. We present the evidence clearly, helping you understand both the science and its practical application.
Personal Support
Learning TM is only the beginning. Lifetime follow-up, refresher sessions and ongoing support are available to help you gain the greatest long-term benefit from your practice.
Authentic Teaching
Transcendental Meditation is taught exactly as it has been handed down through an unbroken tradition for thousands of years. The technique itself has not been changed or adapted because its effectiveness lies in its simplicity and authenticity.
Learning takes place through personal instruction from a certified teacher rather than from a book, video or app. This ensures that each person learns the technique correctly and comfortably from the very beginning, with guidance tailored to individual needs while preserving the integrity of the teaching.
The course includes individual instruction and follow-up sessions designed to help establish a confident and effortless practice. This consistent method of teaching has enabled millions of people around the world to learn Transcendental Meditation successfully. At TM in Action, our commitment is to teach the technique authentically while providing the personal support that helps people enjoy its benefits for a lifetime.
Research Informed
More than five decades of scientific research have examined the effects of Transcendental Meditation on stress, wellbeing, health and human performance. Studies published in peer-reviewed journals have investigated its application across healthcare, education, business, sport, the military and rehabilitation.
TM in Action is committed to presenting this research responsibly and in context. Rather than relying on headlines or isolated findings, we explain what the evidence shows, how studies were conducted and where the strongest evidence exists. This enables visitors to make informed decisions based on reliable information.
Our goal is not simply to present research, but to translate it into practical guidance. By connecting scientific findings with everyday experience, we help people understand how reducing stress and developing inner resilience can support healthier, happier and more successful lives.
Personal Support
Learning Transcendental Meditation is the beginning of an ongoing journey rather than a one-time event. Regular practice is simple, but questions naturally arise as people gain experience. Continued guidance helps ensure that practice remains effortless and enjoyable.
Everyone who learns through TM in Action has access to follow-up support, including personal checking sessions, refresher meetings and opportunities to deepen understanding over time. This continuing support is an important part of the Transcendental Meditation programme and is available whenever it is needed.
Our aim is to build confidence, encourage consistency and help every individual experience the long-term benefits of regular practice. Whether your goal is improved health, greater resilience, higher performance or simply a more balanced life, we are committed to supporting you well beyond the initial course.
Part of a Worldwide Tradition
TM in Action is part of a worldwide community of certified teachers of Transcendental Meditation, united by a shared commitment to teaching the technique authentically and making it widely available.
For many decades, Transcendental Meditation has been taught in schools, universities, businesses, healthcare settings, prisons, the military and local communities across the world. Alongside individual teaching, charitable initiatives have brought the benefits of TM to people facing significant challenges, including disadvantaged young people, veterans, healthcare workers, prisoners and communities affected by poverty, conflict or trauma.
These projects reflect a simple principle: when individuals become less stressed and more resilient, families, workplaces and communities also benefit. TM in Action shares this vision by helping people improve wellbeing, resilience and performance while contributing to a healthier and more compassionate society.
Bringing Research into Practice
Thousands of scientific studies have explored the effects of Transcendental Meditation across health, education, business, sport and rehabilitation. Yet research alone does not change lives. Its value lies in helping people make informed decisions and apply reliable knowledge in everyday life.
TM in Action was created to bridge the gap between scientific evidence and practical experience. Our aim is to present research clearly, accurately and in context while showing how its findings relate to the challenges people face today—from managing stress and improving wellbeing to supporting recovery, learning and high performance.
By combining authentic teaching with evidence-based guidance, we hope to make the benefits of Transcendental Meditation more understandable, accessible and relevant to individuals, organisations and communities alike.
