Learning & Achievement

Explore research into Transcendental Meditation and learning, including what one school study reported and why its findings cannot predict an individual student’s results.

Jan Link, Research Director, discussing Transcendental Meditation and resilience in schools

Unlocking Your Learning Potential

Learning places constant demands on attention, memory and mental energy. Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a simple, natural technique practised for 20 minutes twice daily. TM is commonly described by practitioners as restful. Research has examined academic and psychological outcomes, but results vary by population and study design. The featured study reported changes in standardised English and mathematics scores in one school; it did not establish broad improvements in creativity, mental clarity or individual potential.

on Learning  & Achievement

Research into Transcendental Meditation has examined academic, cognitive and psychological outcomes. The featured study is a useful starting point for one specific question about standardised English and mathematics achievement in at-risk middle-school students.

Transcendental Meditation and Academic Achievement

A three-month quasi-experimental study in one urban middle school reported greater improvement in standardised English and mathematics scores among students practising TM than among controls. It did not establish effects on attendance, school behaviour, creativity or educational outcomes in other settings.
