Building Wellbeing from Within

Modern life places enormous demands on body and mind. Persistent stress can affect sleep, mood, blood pressure, immunity and overall quality of life. Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a simple, natural mental technique practised for 20 minutes twice daily while sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. Unlike concentration or contemplation, TM allows the mind to settle inward effortlessly, producing a state of deep rest while maintaining inner wakefulness. Over the past five decades, researchers have investigated the effects of TM on a wide range of health outcomes. Studies have examined stress, psychological wellbeing, blood pressure and other health outcomes, with differing levels of evidence. Some findings are promising, but they do not establish broad benefits throughout the body. TM is not a medical treatment or a substitute for professional healthcare; anyone with health concerns should continue to follow qualified medical advice.

How TM Supports Health and Wellbeing

Research has examined Transcendental Meditation across several areas of physical and psychological wellbeing. The strength and consistency of evidence differ between outcomes, so each area should be considered on its own merits.

●

❤️ Cardiovascular Health

Some studies have reported reductions in blood pressure and selected cardiovascular risk measures. Evidence for major clinical events remains limited and has been judged low certainty in a subsequent systematic review.

●

🧠 Mental Wellbeing

Some studies have reported reductions in perceived stress, anxiety or depressive symptoms in particular populations. Findings should not be generalised automatically to every person or mental-health condition. Our evidence-led article asks whether Mental Health First Aid at work is being used as a valuable first response or mistaken for a complete strategy.

●

🌙 Sleep and Recovery

Sleep and recovery have been explored in meditation research, but the evidence specific to TM is not yet sufficient to promise improved sleep quality, recovery or daily energy.

●

🛡️ Immune Function

Stress and immune function may be related, but the featured evidence on this page does not establish that TM improves immunity or resistance to illness. This remains an area requiring direct, high-quality research.

Transcendental Meditation and Cardiovascular Disease

A long-term randomised study of 201 African American adults with established coronary heart disease reported a lower rate of the combined outcome of death, non-fatal heart attack and non-fatal stroke in the TM group. The size and wider applicability of the effect remain uncertain.

Why Did the American Heart Association Strengthen Its Support for Transcendental Meditation?

High blood pressure remains one of the greatest preventable causes of heart attack, stroke, heart failure and kidney disease. For decades, doctors have encouraged healthier eating, regular exercise, weight management and stopping smoking. Today, another recommendation has joined that list.
